WORLD WAR I

Private Roy Benjamin Tickel of Iowa, enlisted on his 27th birthday, September 19, 1917. He went with the first contingent from Lucas County and was in Camp Des Moines, Iowa and Camp Cody, New Mexico, until July 1, 1918 when he sailed for overseas service with Company E of the 59th Infantry, 4th Division. He died of pneumonia in the Base Hospital in France. Private Tickel is buried at Newbern, Iowa.

Fireman 3rd Class Jessie William Tickel
of Missouri, served with the U.S. Navy
on board the U.S. Rainbow. In June
of 1918 he was stationed at Naval
Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois.
He was discharged on September 8, 1919,
at St. Louis, Missouri.

Private Henry Wetz Tickle of North Carolina, served on the Mexican border in 1916 with the U.S. Army, Company I, 136th Transportation Group. He was discharged on October 12, 1919.

James Baxter Tickle of North Carolina, served as a Cook for Company A, 321st Infantry.

Private Richard Tickle of North Carolina enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 14, 1899. He served with Company L of the 45th Regiment Infantry U.S. Volunteers. He was discharged at San Francisco, California on June 4, 1914.

Private Benjamin Trigg Tickle of Virginia, enlisted on October 23, 1915 at Columbus Barracks, Ohio with Troop "G" 16th Cavalry at age 22. He reenlisted on October 19, 1919, at Ft. Brown, Brownsville, Texas. 6th Light Mobile Ordnance Repair Shop. He was a member of punitive expedition in Mexico, from March 16, 1916 to February 5, 1917 inclusive. He also served in 2nd Ammunition Train from October 5, 1917 to December 1917. He was discharged on October 18, 1920 at Camp Grant, Illinois. The remarks on his enlistment records included. Character: Excellent, Horsemanship: very good.

Private Frank D. Tickle of Virginia, died of the flu while on active duty.

Private John Nye Tickle of Virginia, died on January 26, 1919 of pneumonia in Germany while on active duty with the U.S. National Guard 147th Infantry, Company F. His body was returned to the states several years after his death and is buried at Bland, Virginia.

Private Sidney Taylor Tickle of Virginia, was drafted at age 21 on September 5, 1918. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 9, 1918.

Private William Erastus Tickle of Virginia, was drafted at age 25 on July 16, 1918. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 20, 1918. He served with Company B, 606th Engineers. He was discharged on December 19, 1919 at Camp Humphreys.

Sgt William Fredrick Tickle of Virginia, served with the 116th Infantry. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Master Sergeant Robert Harkrader Sr of Virginia, retired on September 30, 1938 from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service. He served in the Philippines and Panama under General Pershing and General MacArthur. 16 of his 30 year service were served overseas. Robert was the son of Calvin and Agnes Tickle Harkrader.
