Martha Ann Webb
1870 - 1951

Martha Ann Webb never married. She remained in her parents home during their lifetime. The family always planted a garden. Martha and her mother canned vegetables, fruit and meat enough to last them through the winter. They were both good cooks. Often they would get up early and catch a mess of fish from the river, clean and fry them for breakfast. There was a root cellar where things could be kept cool in the summer and warm enough in the winter to keep from freezing. They dug a hole in the ground and laid straw in the bottom, put in a layer of potatoes, cabbage and turnips, another layer of straw and cover it with dirt. This was their winter supply of vegetables.
