George Washington Oxer
1810-1870
George Washington Oxer was born in Madison County, Kentucky. He was twenty years of age when he came with his parents to Preble County, Ohio settling about one mile northwest of Camden in Somer Township. Upon attaining the age of majority, he began working for Zimri Stratton, an old Quaker farmer of Dixon Township, and was employed as a farm hand until the time of his marriage. He began his domestic life on a small farm located near the Stratton farm. He resided there until the spring of 1839 when he moved across the Indiana line to a place about three miles west of his Ohio farm. There, he carried on agricultural pursuits until 1861 when he returned to Dixon Township where he resided until the time of his death. He was a successful agriculturist and a lover of fine stock, making a specialty of the breeding of high-grade horses, cattle and sheep. George Washington Oxer married Phoebe Gard on June 5, 1834. They were the parents of nine children.
