George Niebert Auxier
1860-1936
George Niebert Auxier was born in Kentucky, and the last of the four brothers to come to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. In 1894 he settled just west of his brother Sam in Washita County. All four brothers now lived on adjoining claims.
A favorite story the family like to tell was of George Niebert as a small boy, sitting by the fireside with the family cat. He was looking at the cat, and evidently felt all alone. He said, "Ole Tat, aint' nobody here, just you and me and fire." From then on, when any of the family felt lonely, they would repeat, "Ole Tat.....". Later generations of Auxier still say, "Ole Tat", never knowing the story behind it.
When the Missouri Settlement opened it's school around 1895, George Niebert taught the first four month term. He was the only instructor for 60 children of all ages through the first eight grades. His nephew, George Fields Auxier, taught the second term.
