Daniel Auxier
1788 - 1863
Daniel Auxier was the grandest character. A giant intellect, a noble character, a deep religious fervor united to a childlike simplicity, made Daniel in reality a great man. Truly does his son, Fletcher Auxier, in speaking of him say "I was personally acquainted with Abraham Lincoln, and between him and my father there was a strong resemblance. In honesty and simplicity of character they were alike. They also resembled in that each was awkward, absent-minded and somewhat peculiar." The singularity of Daniel Auxier is illustrated in some of the incidents told of him. People who knew him say that sometimes when at meeting, Daniel would become so absorbed in the sermon that he would forget himself and without taking his eyes from the preacher, would lean over and pull off one of his shoes, then after awhile he would take off the other.
