William Bickers Auxier
1849 - 1930

William Bickers Auxier was the first of four brothers to migrate to Oklahoma Indian Territory. Upon his arrival he wrote many glowing accounts of the new country to the folks back home, saying he had "found the land of milk and honey" and urging his brothers, Sam, Thomas and George to join him.

William Bickers was a judge at Cloud Chief, Oklahoma which at that time was the county seat of Washita County. Using money they had made raising cattle, Bill and his brother, Sam, started two banks, one at Bessie, Oklahoma and another at Stout, Oklahoma.

William Bickers Auxier married Victoria Virginia McQuarter in Missouri on July 20, 1879. Virginia was a beautiful bride with a good sense of humor and good judgement. Virginia taught school and one of her students was young Barbara Ellen Banner, the future wife of Thomas Jefferson Auxier. Virginia was responsible for the romance between Ella and Tom. Virginia "picked out" Ella who was 12 years younger than Tom.

After Tom and Ella were married, the romantic Virginia choose a time when the young couple would be away from home and filled their stove full of lilacs. She gave them a romantic picture called "Alone At Last" which Ella kept for a long time.

At family dinners, the children were often relegated to eat after the adults at the second table but, in Virginia's home, the children always ate first.
